What are the best CSS courses online you can take right now in 2024?

I tried more than a dozen CSS classes from top online course websites like Udemy and Coursera to find out.

I’ve ranked my 6 favorites based on a number of key factors, including quality of the curriculum, credentials of the instructor, student reviews, cost, and more (click here to learn about our entire Editorial Process & Methodology for product reviews).

Lets get started.

The Best CSS Courses Online Right Now

When it comes to finding the best CSS courses online, you’ll often encounter reviews that are either written by individuals who haven’t actually taken the courses or are motivated more by earning affiliate commissions than providing genuine insights.

I wanted to take a different approach.

I dedicated myself to actually diving into these CSS courses, taking trial lessons, researching the teachers, and even reading what other students had to say about their experiences.

Yes, it involved countless hours glued to my screen, sometimes straining through complex concepts and coding challenges. But this hands-on experience was invaluable for truly understanding which courses are worth your time and investment.

I felt like I was a college student all over again…

With that in mind, here are the ones that stood out the most…

1. HTML and CSS for Beginners – Build a Website & Launch ONLINE (Udemy)

You could start this course with absolutely no knowledge of HTML and CSS and by the time you finish, not only will you earn a certificate, but you’ll also feel confident handling the concepts taught. This class is a comprehensive guide to mastering the essentials of HTML and CSS, giving you the skills to build entire websites from the ground up.

The course is led by Edwin Diaz, a seasoned software engineer with extensive experience in HTML, CSS, and various other technologies. I found his approach to be incredibly beginner-friendly, making complex concepts accessible and engaging. I particularly appreciated how the course is structured, laid out in a way that fostered a smooth learning curve for anyone new to front-end development.

If I had to think of any drawback to the class it’s that the last section of the course felt somewhat promotional. There’s a noticeable shift where the instructor suggests using GoDaddy for hosting, which verged a bit more toward being an advertisement than educational content. The bonus lecture primarily focuses on promoting Edwin’s other courses, offering deals through his website.

While these aspects didn’t detract from the overall quality of the course, they were a slight deviation from the learning experience.

Overall, whether you aim to enhance your design skills or pursue a career as a front-end developer, this course is an excellent starting point. It’s a testament to Edwin’s teaching prowess that you can begin with zero knowledge and emerge with a solid understanding and practical skills in HTML and CSS.

This CSS course stands out for its comprehensive coverage of HTML5 and CSS3. As the #1 bestselling HTML and CSS course on Udemy, it’s a complete package that keeps you up-to-date with the latest in web development. The course was entirely revamped in July 2021, featuring over 35 hours of video content, so the material is still pretty relevant.

Jonas Schmedtmann, the instructor, has a knack for breaking down complex topics into digestible, easy-to-understand segments. His beginner-friendly approach resonated with me personally, as he meticulously explained each concept and its real-world application. Jonas’s commitment to depth and clarity made it easy for me to follow along and grasp the intricacies of front-end development.

What I really like about this course was its practicality. The lectures are engaging, and Jonas provides a unique web design framework filled with user-friendly rules and guidelines. This approach not only teaches you the technical skills but also how to create visually stunning websites.

However, be prepared for some lengthy videos. While they are packed with valuable information, they require a bit of time commitment, so planning your study sessions accordingly is advisable.

If you’re willing to take notes and deeply understand the teachings, you’ll be well-equipped to advance in your web development journey. This course isn’t just about learning; it’s about applying what you learn to build responsive, real-world websites. Thanks to Jonas’s thorough and accessible teaching style, I feel confident in taking the next steps in my web development career.

If you’re trying to learn more about web development and create your own websites from scratch, this course is a solid starting point. Designed for absolute beginners, it guides you through the essentials of HTML and CSS, teaching you how to craft websites using stylesheets and providing a solid foundation in HTML5.

What’s great about this course is that you don’t need any prior experience with coding or web development frameworks. All you need is a web browser and a text editor, and you’re set to start your journey.

This course is a concise yet comprehensive guide into the basics of web development.

The instructor’s delivery is clear and easy to follow, making complex concepts accessible to beginners. What stood out to me the most was the course’s practical approach. Instead of overwhelming you with just theory, it includes numerous real-world examples that help you understand how to apply what you’re learning.

I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of content covered in this course. Despite its seemingly basic level, it delves into areas I hadn’t expected, offering more than just a superficial understanding of web development.

The pacing is spot-on, with content that’s easy to digest and understand. By the end of this course, you’ll have gained the skills to create not just functional but also aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly websites.

4. HTML, CSS, and Javascript for Web Developers (Coursera)

Duration

40 hours

This course is your gateway to mastering the essentials of web technologies. A proven resource for individuals seeking to enhance their development skills, the class offers some valuable insights into not only HTML and CSS but Javascript as well.

Taught by Professor Yaakov Chaikin from Johns Hopkins University, this course gives you the perspective of an industry expert into the scope of these technologies.

I like the way the course is structured. The curriculum itself is divided into 5 modules, each one is built to complement the last. You’ll initially learn how to create simple modern web pages with HTML and CSS, ensuring that your content and stylings render quickly. Then you’ll delve into responsive web design techniques, allowing your web pages and layouts to adapt seamlessly to different screen sizes without manually adjusting them for each screen.

The content is paced very well, although the final week is packed with a lot of information, giving you a lot to digest. However, you can always rewatch the videos any time you want to master the material.

There is one thing I need to note — a small portion of the content is a bit outdated. The class was made originally in 2016, so there’s some info that could use refreshing.

With its practical and hands-on approach to learning, this class does a great job catering to learners of all levels and helps you build your foundation as a new web developer.

Throughout five modules, you’ll cover all the basics of CSS and be given hands-on experience in implementing styles and designs.

I also liked that the course placed special emphasis on accessibility guidelines, ensuring that your web pages are inclusive and user-friendly for people with disabilities.
